3 Ways Smart Entrepreneurs Use Downtown Amenities to Build Business

November 20, 2019

Every growing business owner wants to be in the heart of the action, right? Being downtown puts you dead center in the heart of Arizona business. Some of the biggest deals happen right at our doorstep. And it’s no wonder, with all of the incredible amenities available to us to help facilitate these deals. But how do you use those amazing downtown locations to deepen relationships and win more business? Here are 3 solid ways to build your business just using the entertainment options downtown Phoenix offers.

Business Turns on Trust

Before we dive into the particulars of utilizing downtown Phoenix we need to understand why we would take an existing or potential customer to a game, show, or dinner. As a business owner, you have to be careful how you spend money. Why should meals & entertainment take up any more of your budget? Because eating and hanging out together builds trust.

Who are you more likely to trust, a stranger or your best friend? Why? Because your best friend has shown you time and again that they’re trustworthy and the stranger hasn’t. Could the stranger be right about what they’re saying to you? Of course. But if they don’t have your trust, it doesn’t matter.

Business relationships are the same way. People prefer to do business with people they believe they can trust. If you want to win more business, you need to be known. There’s no other way around it. So how do people get to know others? Some of the most common ways include sharing a meal, enjoying a game, or going to a performance together. If you want to grow your business, you’re going to have to make space in your budget for these kinds of things. Luckily for you, downtown Phoenix is bursting with a variety of options to help you build and deepen relationships.

Now that we understand what we’re trying to accomplish with these things, we can drill down into some specifics. This month we’re going to focus on entertainment and after work hours options. Next month we’ll dive into local options during normal business hours.

1.) Enjoy a Game Together

The Phoenix Suns are good again! Could this be the first time since 2010 that the Suns make the playoffs? With Devin Booker being the 5th youngest player in NBA history to score 5,000 points, we could be in for a fun ride.

According to a recent Gallup poll, up to 57% of people in the US are college & professional sports fans, depending on the sport. This makes going to a game together with a huge opportunity to deepen relationships with potential and existing customers. Downtown Phoenix is home to many sports venues covering the whole spectrum of professional and collegiate sports. This gives you several avenues to connect with your customers. And little else creates a bond like celebrating a victory or mourning a loss with another fan.

2.) Meet After Work for Dinner and a Drink

If you or your customers aren’t sports fans, invite them to dinner. Everybody enjoys a great meal with good company. Before you extend the invite be sure to do your research. You want to make sure you’re inviting them to a quality restaurant with several options for them to choose from. Many people have restrictive diets and you don’t want them to feel uneasy with the options available to them. It might even be wise to make sure they don’t have any allergies or aversions before you recommend a restaurant.

If you’re not sure where to go, try The Kettle Black an awesome gastro-pub downstairs. Harumi Sushi is our favorite Sushi restaurant in Phoenix. We recommend the purple rice. And Breadfruit Rum Bar serves Jamaican food with some of the best drinks in town.

All of these places are within walking distance of our offices and come highly recommended. You could also ask them to share one of their favorite restaurants. If you enjoy their favorites, that will go a long way to build trust. However, you choose to extend the invite, be sure to check out the reviews before you set the location. Nothing will kill the buzz of relationship-building like a sour shrimp.  And wherever you decide to go, remember to pick up the tab!

3.) See a Musician, Band or Comedian Together

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t listen to music and hated laughing. The Talking Stick Arena regularly hosts the best musicians and comedians in the world and they’re minutes away from our offices downtown. And in addition to the regular mainstream concerts and comedy shows at Talking Stick, check out some smaller Phoenix venues, like The Van Buren or Crescent Ballroom. Or check out the local acts at the underground Valley Bar downtown.

A shared interest in the same performers goes a long way to build trust and deepen a relationship. You need to be careful though because if you invite them to see a band or person they dislike, you might create more distrust than trust. So before you invite them, consider asking their opinion about some of the upcoming performances. If you’re both into a specific musician, band, or comedian make the offer to see it together and set the date. As with our other suggestions, make sure you pick up the tab!
